What We Do

The Plettenberg Bay Community Environment Forum (PBCEF) is a long-standing, community-driven watchdog dedicated to protecting the natural heritage of Pletten-berg Bay. For over 25 years, the Forum has actively monitored development pres-sures, upheld environmental legislation, and promoted informed, participatory deci-sion-making. It brings together experts, scientists, lawyers, and concerned residents to address challenges such as water security, marine oil and gas threats, invasive species, and unsustainable land use.

The Forum plays a key role in guiding spatial planning, advocating for ecosystem health, and defending the environmental integrity that underpins Plett’s economy and quality of life. Current projects include the Plett Nature Park, the Plett Estuarine Park, and alien plant removal efforts that restore water flows and support local liveli-hoods. As development pressures grow, the PBCEF calls on all residents to get in-volved—through funding, volunteering, and awareness—ensuring that Plett’s natural beauty and biodiversity are preserved for generations to come.

Vision
We believe that our people’s constitutional rights should be realised; specifically, the right to a healthy and protected environment for all. Therefore, the Forum is structured in such a way as to promote, support and encourage the realisation of these rights.
Mission

Our mission is to promote the constitutional rights of our people through the pro-motion of conservation and sustainable development and the creation of environ-mental awareness and education initiatives, whilst uplifting the livelihoods of the community.

Our principles
Our guiding principle is to encourage development that is appropriate for our unique and beautiful surroundings by participating in processes that apply envi-ronmental legislation to decision-making, to follow “better-than-best” practice prin-ciples and to exercise good governance.

We will strive to implement pro-active, collaborative programmes to enhance habi-tats and their species and work with communities towards enabling healthy envi-ronments.
